Resource book on hiring persons with disabilities Inaugurated


National Federation of the Disabled, Nepal organized an event in Kathmandu to inaugurate its publication - "Hiring Persons with Disabilities - a resource book for employers" on 7th December 2016. The resource book was jointly inaugurated by Australian Ambassador to Nepal His Excellency Glenn White, Vice President of FNCCI and Head of Golchha Organization Mr. Shekhar Golcha, President of Human Resource Society Nepal Mr. Kumar Joshi and General Secretary of NFDN Mr. Raju Basnet. The resource book was prepared and published with the help of Australian Government under Direct Aid Fund 2014-15.

Hiring Persons with Disabilities, resource book Launch

The program was started with the welcome speech by Mr. Manish Prasai, Administrative manager of NFDN. Mr. Prasai shared NFDN initiative towards the promotion of employment of persons with disabilities and highlighted the importance of such resource book. After that, Mr. Bishal Dahal, Work placement coordinator at NFDN and also one of the authors of the resource book shared the main highlights of the resource book and how it might be useful to employers.

After the formal inauguration of the publication, an interaction session with the employers was also organized. To begin the interaction session, two employers shared their experience of working with people with disabilities in their organization. Mr. Amit Sharma , HR Manager of Laxmi Bank and Mr. Shailendra Raj Giri, MD of Mero jobs shared their experience with the audience to set the mood for the interaction session that followed. Following the presentations, few participants also presented some queries and their own comments regarding the subject.

At the end of the program, guests gave their remarks. Mr. Sven Coppens of Plan International Nepal shared various initiative of Plan International in Nepal and linked the importance of inclusive education and the employment. His Excellency Glen White, Australian Ambassador to Nepal said that the promotion of employment for persons with disabilities will make them independent and contributing member of society. He also shared various activities and program of Australian Government towards disability inclusion.

Mr. Shekhar Golcha, Vice President of FNCCI and head of Golcha Organization shared that even being the largest employer of Nepal (after Nepal Govt.), his company was not being able to hire persons with disabilities as employees effectively. He also shared that persons with disabilities should also have a career oriented goal to get employed. At the end of his remarks, he shared his commitment to creating more jobs to persons with disabilities in days to come.

Mr. Kumar Joshi, President of Human Resource Society Nepal congratulated NFDN for publishing the resource book and also for organizing such events for educating employers about the diverse workforce. He shared both his personal as well his organizations' commitment to playing effectively in creating and promoting job opportunities for people with disabilities in days to come.

At the end of the program, Mr. Raju Basnet, General Secretary of NFDN shared some of the important activities and programs being done by NFDN to help people with disabilities to get a job. He shared that more than 60 people get counseling and support for various job preparation activities at NFDN every month. Mr. Basnet concluded the program by thanking everyone for coming to the program and directly and indirectly commiting and playing an important role in promotion of persons with disabilities.

The event was organized with the support of Australian Embassy Kathmandu and Plan International Nepal. Mr. Sagar Prasai, Project Coordinator of NFDN hosted the program and about 90 people participated representing Employers, DPOs, and Other Development Partners.
